Food & Drink

The Fox and Rabbit Inn
on A169 Pickering to Whitby Road and 'The Horseshoe Inn' at the nearby village of Levisham. Both are owned by Charles and Toby Wood and both establishments are gaining increasingly good reputations for food.
The Fox and Rabbit is already a popular venue for dining out and has a restaurant as well as a bar area.
The Horseshoe is smaller but has outside eating areas too, with the steam railway station nearby. It welcomes walkers and also has B&B accommodation.

Mojo's Music Cafe on Eastway (along the road from the SJT) is a local's favourite. Expect to come away having eaten a far bigger lunch than you intended, accompanied by an eclectic pop and rock soundtrack and memorabilia on the walls. Plus, whilst you're waiting for your 'bob marley bagel' or 'chris de burger' you can browse the record shop on the other side of the room. Proprietor Steve is something of a local hero, organising the Acoustic Gathering music festival in Peasholm Park and has programmed the Acoustic Lounge for Coastival.

Francis Tea Rooms - probably Scarborough's best kept secret and rather handy if you're visiting South Street Gallery (it's opposite). It's a step back in time with wood panelled booths, home baking and proper English tea.

The Waterfront Cafe (on Sandside) was the first seafront establishment in Scarborough to install an espresso machine and thus helped start a cultural revolution round the harbour. It's where fishermen warm up after fixing nets and locals converge for a Sunday morning fry-up alongside tourists eager to make the most of the day.

Ask Restaurant, The Harbour. Probably the best setting in Scarborough - overlook the fishing fleet and views down the coast as you enjoy your pizza.

Blue Lounge, St Nicholas Street. Contemporary decor and relaxed urban atmosphere make it a quiet lunchtime destination, cocktails and DJs make it one of the town's most popular bars at night.

Le Cafe Jardin, Huntriss Row (Town Centre). Real men don't eat quiche, except at Cafe Jardin where it really is quite excellent. Tip: head upstairs for the rooms with sofas and fireplaces.

Bonnet's, Huntriss Row (Town Centre). One the longest established chocolate manufactures in the UK, Bonnet's cafe's courtyard is a lovely sheltered spot for cappuccino and delicious cake if we're having a mild February.

Soltz, Vernon Street (Town Centre, near the Central Library). Good spot for decent home-made pub lunches and early evening food.

Peppers, York Place (Town Centre). Thought by many to be the best restaurant in town if not North Yorkshire. Contemporary English dining but without being self-concious - this is Scarborough after all. Booking is usually essential at the weekend.

The Merchant, Eastborough (heading from town to the harbour). Formerly 'The Jolly Roger', an Irish pub makeover has somehow suited The Merchant, probably because it is Irish-owned. Go there for the best Guinness in town and the highly coveted benches by the open fire. Live folk music at least one night a week.

The Golden Ball
, Sandside. Harbourside pub serving Samuel Smiths. Good value fish and chips at lunch on a weekend and great views of the harbour (front bar over 18's only - comfortable family room with leather sofas and low tables to the rear of the pub).

The Scalby Mills (near the Sealife Centre, North Bay). If it's nice weather, the walk round the headland along North Bay and to the Scalby Mills can be a treat. You'll have earned a pint of real ale and good fish and chips when you get there so relax with views over the North Bay to the castle. 'Dog and sprog friendly'.

The Valley and Cellars, Valley Road. Two of the towns best real ale (and in the case of The Valley, real cider) pubs are a matter of yards from each other and well worth a diversion if you're heading to The Spa at Coastival. Cellars is well known for cramming wonderful live music and open mic nights into it's modest bar. Plan your hotel for the Valley Road area and they'll be your local...

This is a vegetarian cafe serving really fantastic quality food that could lure even the biggest meat eater.  As well as the normal selection there are two different main courses everyday with plenty of homemade cakes made on a daily basis.

Try a stroll down Scarborough's old down and check out some of the new cafes and restaurants that have sprung up in the last couple of years along Eastborough below the Markets.  There’s some great views over the sea in cosy atmospheres. Le Chat Noir is a great friendly little restaurant too. If you want fish and chips just down from Chat is a new take-away with great fish.(run by two Russians). When your in the area check out the extensive hand painted murals on Blands Cliff which were done by local artists to regenerate the area. Then there is the Jazz club on Wednesday evenings at the Cask by the bridge... A great friendly night.
